On to the final 16 select fyrd. Some of these minis would not be out of place among late Romans, others have an odd almost lamellar looking short byrnie. But the main point is that they all line up as shield wall. Today, I've given each a black base to their armor.

There's no perfect way to combine two base caulk colors with a crowded base. I plan to add some surface stones when I add foliage.

These fyrd are all ready to base!

I kept the shields colors very simple. The "swirl" pattern is etched in by Strelets, and the quadrants are etched in on those HaT parthian foot. 

I do notice the eyes now look super-dark, as the wash settles in over the whites, dulling to a grey. I'll think about whether to touch those up.

Got the faces and highlights done today. Quite a few fixups or final decisions about clothing. Some of the minis have an odd hood, thrown back, which I suspect should be very colorful. I've let them leathern colored. Some minis have a weird brigandine, split high on the sides. I repainted those leathern as well, despite doubts.

I'll tackle shields first thing tomorrow, when my hand is steadier...

bench update 2 April 2022 - Anglo-Dane fyrd

I've been mass-painting the fyrd, 28 minis in total. Colors blocked out and browns on now. 

the two stands at rear are the 16 remaining select fyrd.

II/78 Late Imperial Romans finished

For realsies! 

Added a giant 28mm version of the standard (pointless since the general is Cavalry) and now that all decals are edged, sprayed all with matt varnish from Army Painter.

Paint matching the decals: Vallejo gory red is as perfect as needed; green was much trickier. Ended up with 2:1 Vallejo Park green flat to Vallejo sea-grey.

The centre front pair are C5 germanics ready to incorporate. They are by MiniArt.
